Dorn sees "growing intellectual anti-Semitism"
The Hessian Minister of Culture Angela Dorn (Greens) has warned of a "growing intellectual anti-Semitism". This comes in addition to growing anti-Semitism from the right and from people with a migration background who are influenced by Islamism, she said on Friday evening at a discussion event in Kassel, which dealt with the reappraisal of the anti-Semitism scandal at the documenta art show last year, among other things.
Intellectual anti-Semitism is dangerous, said Dorn. It portrayed Hamas' terror as a legitimate response to Israel's policies. It should not be the case that Jews all over the world have to fear for their lives every day.
With a view to the future of documenta, the Minister spoke out in favor of a thorough reappraisal of the scandal surrounding the previous show. "The shadow of documenta 15 must not lie on documenta 16," she said. The 16th edition of the art exhibition is planned for 2027 in Kassel. Traditionally, documenta takes place every five years.
At the event on Friday evening, documenta Managing Director Andreas Hoffmann reiterated his call for a comprehensive relaunch of the art show. He had previously called for documenta's organizational structure to be scrutinized. According to him, responsibilities, structures and processes should be examined with the help of external experts.
Dorn emphasized the importance of addressing intellectual anti-Semitism in art exhibitions, as it was evident during the documentation of terror actions by Hamas as a legitimate response. The historical context of the anti-Semitism scandal at the previous documenta art show necessitates a thorough reappraisal to ensure a bias-free future for the exhibition.
