Crime - Dog eats poisoned bait and dies
The police are warning about poisoned baits in Heidelberg. In the area of Sandhof Weg, several baits made of cooked meat with thumbtacks, small screws, and white/blue balls have been laid out since late June, the police reported. A four-year-old dog died after consuming them, and another was reportedly operated on. It cannot be ruled out that more baits have been or will be laid out, a spokesperson said. Therefore, the police have now launched a witness appeal.
Similar cases have occurred, according to the statement, in February of the previous year. In those cases, hacked meat with white powder and sometimes nails or cleaver blades were used. An investigation into any connection is ongoing.
The incident of poisoned baits in Heidelberg has prompted concerns in nearby areas of Baden-Württemberg. Authorities are urging pet owners in Baden-Württemberg to be extra vigilant, especially in parks and open spaces, as similar crimes involving harmful baits for animals have been reported before, such as in Heidelberg itself back in February.
