Exhibitions - documenta: Final report on the organizational structure

Following the anti-Semitism incidents at documenta fifteen, a final report with 22 recommendations for organizational development is now available. documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH published the 46-page paper on Friday. The show's supervisory board had commissioned the management consultancy Metrum to carry out the investigation.

Last year's documenta fifteen was overshadowed by an anti-Semitism scandal. The upcoming documenta in 2027 has also recently been the subject of controversy. Following renewed accusations of anti-Semitism against a member of the selection committee for the 16th edition of the exhibition, first this member and later the entire selection committee recently resigned. Alongside the Venice Biennale, documenta is regarded as the most important exhibition of contemporary art.

The recommendations concern the management structure as well as the operational and organizational structure, as announced by documenta gGmbH. "The aim of the organizational development is to establish effective measures against anti-Semitism and other forms of group-specific misanthropy while fully protecting artistic freedom and increasing the crisis resilience and future viability of the non-profit documenta und Museum Fridericianum GmbH," it said.

The recommendations include retaining the search committee with adjustments and implementing two codes of conduct to ensure the protection of human dignity and artistic freedom. According to the recommendations, the Supervisory Board should be emphasized as the main body for monitoring documenta gGmbH and at the same time be reduced in size. The federal government should be given voting rights on the board. However, it should not become a shareholder. Corresponding demands were raised in the wake of the anti-Semitism scandal last year.

It is also recommended that the responsibilities of the management and artistic direction be clarified and a "new and clear organizational chart of the gGmbH" be developed.
