- Dithmarscher geese awarded EU quality label
The Dithmarscher Goose is now protected by an EU quality label. This ensures that the regional specialty originates from the north German region and, for instance, a certain proportion of its feed also comes from Dithmarschen, as stated in a European Commission communication. In the previously submitted application for registration as a so-called protected geographical indication, it is stated that the Dithmarscher Goose is an old land goose breed, the breeding of which began about 150 years ago.
The Dithmarscher Goose is described as a robust goose that benefits from the extensive, wet meadows and marshes of the Dithmarschen region at least until the 21st day of life. It is a relatively heavy goose with an average fattening weight of six to eight kilograms. Dithmarscher geese are traditionally marketed on so-called seasonal farmers' markets by local goose breeding operations on special so-called goose markets, as stated in the application for the protection label.
The Dithmarscher Goose's unique characteristics and traditional farming methods have led to its recognition beyond Dithmarschen, with many German gourmets enthusiastically promoting this regional specialty. Despite its popularity in Germany, exporting Dithmarscher Geese to other EU countries is still a promising opportunity for local farmers, given the EU's protection and recognition of this product.
