Health - District sees medical care under threat
The district of Ostprignitz-Ruppin believes that the imminent closure of two departments at Neuruppin University Hospital will jeopardize healthcare in the region. The heads of the district parliamentary groups, the managing director and supervisory board of the clinic holding company and District Administrator Ralf Reinhardt (SPD) therefore wrote to Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD), the district announced on Tuesday. The letter states that care in the north-west of Brandenburg is at risk due to the closure of the clinics for oral and maxillofacial surgery and ear, nose and throat diseases.
The signatories are calling for funding to secure the existence of specialist hospitals until the hospital reform planned by Lauterbach is implemented.
The Ruppin-Brandenburg University Hospital, which according to the district is the region's central specialist healthcare provider, is having to close two specialist departments for cost reasons. The two clinics recently treated 862 inpatients and 2670 outpatients per year. With the closure, necessary outpatient and inpatient care in these areas is disappearing in an area twice the size of Saarland. This endangers human lives and leads to unequal life chances.
The situation for clinics nationwide is difficult due to high deficits. In Brandenburg, the situation is not only problematic in Neuruppin: the Elbe-Elster-Klinikum, which has three sites, plans to consolidate inpatient care at two sites from June 2024 due to financial difficulties. Last year, Spremberg Hospital in the district of Spree-Neiße applied for planned insolvency as protective shield proceedings and drew up a restructuring plan. The Ministry of Health set up a project group in view of the financial difficulties faced by hospitals.
