Local governments - District elections: The Greens may suffer setbacks
The tally of the Hamburg district elections, which coincided with the European election, has commenced. Four hours later, 480 out of 1921 polling places had been counted, with an expected final outcome not looming before 6:00 pm, noted the state's election supervisor, Oliver Rudolf. Over 1700 contestants had contended for the roughly 350 seats in the seven district assemblies.
After their disappointing results in the European election, Hamburg's Green party is eagerly awaiting the outcome of the counting. Initial tentative results hint at a dip in the party's public approval ratings in the districts. The Greens are predicted to hold their positions of leadership in Altona, Eimsbüttel, and Nord. However, the SPD holds the lead in Mitte, Wandsbek, Bergedorf, and Harburg. There were also gains for the CDU and AfD.
Five years ago, the Greens emerged victorious in both the district and European elections in the Hanseatic city, garnering historically high numbers. In the district election, they secured 31.3% of the votes, making them the most popular party in four of the seven areas. The SPD came in second across all districts with 24% of the votes. The CDU managed 18.2%, the Left achieved 10.8%, the FDP received 6.6%, and the AfD tallied 6.4% of the votes.
