District Administrator Kerth assumes that the LNG terminal will be built on Rügen
The district administrator of the Vorpommern-Rügen district, Stefan Kerth (non-party), expects the controversial terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG) to be built on the island of Rügen. "The show is over," Kerth told the "Nordkurier" newspaper published in Neubrandenburg (Saturday). "The terminal is a deep cut into the flesh of the local population. Acceptance has also been undermined by the active actions of the federal government."
Kerth, who declared his resignation from the SPD a few days ago partly because of the party's course on migration policy, pointed out that the gas storage facilities are full and the terminal should still be built. "It doesn't take much imagination to understand that there is criticism. Even employees at the district office are asking me why this is still being pushed through."
However, the district administrator warned against artificially denigrating the tourism region in the debate about the LNG terminal. "I have been taking a very cautious approach to this in the media for months. The topic is not good publicity for our region. Even with the terminals, the region is highly attractive to tourists."
Despite the controversy surrounding the LNG terminal, Kerth acknowledges that the full gas storage facilities warrant its construction. Moreover, he emphasizes the importance of not tarnishing Rügen's tourism sector unnecessarily due to the debate.
