Discouraged Pavlovic May Miss Out on European Championship Opportunity

Aleksandar Pavlovic, a young footballer, has to leave the European Championship. Coach Julian Nagelsmann of Germany leans on older players for a late selection right before the event kicks off. However, Leon Goretzka is not chosen.

Aleksandar Pavlovic will be missed by the national team, as he has been struck with bad luck once again. Just two days before the Euros opening match, he shared his disappointment on Instagram, saying, "I'm so sad that the dream of the home Euros is over! Good luck to the boys! And I'll come back stronger!" He posted this with a somber black background, similar to a mourning announcement.

National team coach Julian Nagelsmann will have to work without Pavlovic, who is dealing with an infection. Unlike the other 25 players, Pavlovic had not returned to the team quarters in Franconia by Monday. This led to the initial postponement of the photo shoot for the DFB selection. Then came the news of their tournament exit. Training with the other 22 field players and three goalkeepers carried on as planned in the morning. Nagelsmann can still replace any sick or injured players until the Euros kick-off against Scotland on Friday (9 p.m./ZDF/Magenta TV).

Emre Can, who last played for Germany's national team in September 2021, has been called up as a replacement. "We wanted an additional six-man in the squad and decided to include Emre Can," said Nagelsmann. Can expressed his enthusiasm to join the team, and the national coach added, "We needed a player who has played many games and can handle pressure. He fits the criteria."

In the DFB announcement, there was no quote from Nagelsmann, indicating that he might be focused on the tournament and making quick decisions.

Emre Can settles into the backup role for the team, with Toni Kroos and Robert Andrich set as the fifth and sixth men. Pascal Groß serves as the first substitute. The decision to not include Joshua Kimmich was consistent with Nagelsmann's strict personnel choices. Kimmich had recently posted a vacation photo from Norway, and the news of his exclusion hit him hard.

Jamal Musiala, Pavlovic's Bayern teammate, expressed his sympathy, stating, "I feel really bad for Pavlo. He will stay positive." The young midfielder had not been a major factor in Nagelsmann's plans for the opening match against Scotland.

Pavlovic's misfortunes continue for the DFB team. His debut was supposed to happen in March, but he couldn't join due to a mandibular inflammation during the matches in France and against the Netherlands. He contemplated another operation because this issue kept recurring. Pavlovic had decided on a career in the German jersey after his successful debut season with Bayern, but he could also have played for Serbia's national team.
