Digital examination center for state law exams inaugurated
In Hamburg, prospective lawyers will be able to take and pass their state exams electronically in future. A new digital examination center was opened for this purpose on Thursday, as announced by the justice authorities. In future, up to 150 candidates from Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein could be examined there at the same time. Hamburg's Senator for Justice Anna Gallina (Greens), Schleswig-Holstein's Minister of Justice Kerstin von der Decken (CDU) and the President of the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court, Marc Tully, took part in the inauguration of the center in Dammtorstraße.
According to the information provided, each examination station is equipped with a 24-inch monitor, a so-called whisper keyboard and a correspondingly quiet mouse. A privacy film on the screens is intended to prevent the screens from being copied, and sound-absorbing privacy screens have also been installed everywhere.
"The state exam 2.0 is starting in Hamburg," said Senator Gallina. "Handwritten exams are no longer in keeping with the times. We are putting an end to this paperwork with the digital examination center of the judiciary." The e-examination would also avoid examination distortions, increase equal opportunities and make the examiners' work easier.
The new examination center is a further step towards the digitalization of the justice system, said her Kiel colleague von der Decken. "The decades-long cooperation with Hamburg and Bremen for the second state law examination has proven its worth and is now being further developed."
From next week, the processes in the new center will be tested in mock exams - but initially still by hand. From January 2024, the regular mock exams for exam preparation will be converted to the electronic format. Real operation is scheduled to begin in April 2024. Even then, candidates will still be free to continue writing the exams by hand.
This digital examination center will greatly enhance access to justice, as it provides an opportunity for Justice Education. With the implementation of electronic exams, candidates can now study and take exams using the Internet, thereby promoting digital literacy.
