Digital classroom: strengthening students' media skills
Leipzig University wants to increasingly prepare prospective teachers for the use of modern media in the classroom. As project coordinator Sarah Bischof explained, various seminars in the field of media education are offered at the Center for Teacher Education and School Research. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) also play a role here.
With a so-called digital classroom consisting of two physical rooms, "the media competence and digital skills of various target groups" are to be strengthened, according to Bischof. VR glasses, mobile devices, visualization and presentation hardware as well as AR and VR technology are all available.
Students and lecturers deal with "media education, media pedagogy and media didactics", according to the project description. According to Bischof, students can also use the classroom outside of seminars to try things out. The central question is therefore how technology can be meaningfully integrated into school lessons.
The digital classroom has been available for teaching since April 2023. Last summer semester, seminars were held on topics such as fake news and conspiracy theories, creating explanatory videos with learning groups and media education in elementary school. In future, school classes will also be able to take advantage of the offer.
Universities play a crucial role in equipping educators with the necessary skills to incorporate modern media in their teaching methods. At Leipzig University, for instance, the Center for Teacher Education and School Research offers seminars on media education, facilitating the use of AR and VR in schools.
Upon graduation, these educated teachers will bring advanced media skills to their respective schools, ensuring a well-rounded education for students, complementing traditional classroom teaching with digital tools and methods.
