Bundesliga - Dieter Hoeneß on league hit: "You can trust VfB with anything"
Dieter Hoeneß is excited about the upcoming top match in the Bundesliga and is hoping for a coup for VfB Stuttgart at FC Bayern Munich. "You can trust VfB to do anything at the moment," the father of VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß and brother of Bayern's honorary president Uli Hoeneß told the German Press Agency: "I've settled on a formula: VfB should win the game and Bayern should become champions again."
Dieter Hoeneß, who once played for VfB and Bayern, plans to watch the game between the second and third-placed teams on Sunday (7.30pm/DAZN) in the stadium. "Of course I'm looking forward to the game. It promises to be a good game, because two strong teams will meet," said the 70-year-old.
The Swabians have been coached by Sebastian Hoeneß since the beginning of April. Initially, the coach saved Stuttgart from falling into the second tier, but this season VfB are playing furiously under him. Most recently, the Swabians were not even beaten by league leaders Bayer Leverkusen (1:1) and, after a 2:1 win in the league, also won the DFB Cup against Borussia Dortmund (2:0).
"Anything is possible. On the one hand, VfB have proven this season that they can hold their own against anyone. On the other hand, we know that FC Bayern is very difficult to beat on a good day," said Dieter Hoeneß. VfB would probably have preferred it if Bayern had not recently suffered a 5-1 debacle in Frankfurt in the Bundesliga. "It's usually the case that Bayern then emerge strongly from such an interim crisis."
The family blessing does not depend on the result of the game. "You look at it all in sporting terms. If Uli wants it for anyone, it's Sebastian," said Dieter Hoeneß. FC Bayern are currently just one point ahead of VfB, but still have a catch-up game. In the Champions League, the German record champions showed a reaction to their heavy defeat in Frankfurt with a 1-0 win at Manchester United on Tuesday.
