The Diakonie in Schleswig-Holstein has harshly criticized the discussions surrounding a stricter asylum policy. Politics need to cease the "one-upmanship game" and stick to lawful procedures for refugees, the state association urged.

As per Diakonie board member Heiko Naß, the ongoing debates about stricter asylum laws and border denials are damaging social unity. These discussions are being carried out at the expense of individuals who have taken refuge in Germany and have become integrated into society.

Immigrants aren't responsible for issues like housing scarcity or inadequate infrastructure, but they're bolstering society in sectors like healthcare and IT, despite a labor shortage, stated Naß. It's crucial, in the wake of incidents in Solingen and Brokstedt, not to exclude people based on their origin. Instead, there's a need for more investment and political decisions to promote the successful integration of immigrants.

The competition for over-bidding in the implementation of stricter asylum policies could potentially lead to detrimental consequences for refugee integration. This heightened competition should be replaced with a focus on adhering to legal procedures and fostering a welcoming environment for refugees, given the ongoing debates.
