DHL: New sorting facility in Hamburg parcel center in operation
Deutsche Post DHL has significantly expanded its capacity at its Hamburg parcel center in the Allermöhe district. A new hall, which went into operation on Monday, creates an additional sorting capacity of 20,000 parcels per hour. "The Hamburg parcel center can now process around 52,000 parcels per hour," the company announced. "This makes it one of the Group's largest parcel centers in Germany." The new hall is expected to create around 220 additional jobs over the next two years, subject to collective wage agreements. A total of over 500 employees currently work at the Hamburg parcel center.
"Logistics is one of the most important sectors in Hamburg," said Hamburg's Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD). "I am delighted that Deutsche Post DHL is making the Hamburg site fit for the future and that people in the north can use its reliable and fast services." According to DHL branch manager Stefan Eckelmann, the additional sorting capacity will primarily benefit senders and recipients in the Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regions.
In total, Deutsche Post and DHL operate a network of 38 parcel centers nationwide with an average shipment volume of 6.2 million parcels per day. In the run-up to Christmas, the logistics group expects around 11 million parcels on the busiest days. Last year, Deutsche Post and DHL sorted around 100 million parcels at the Hamburg parcel center.
Deutsche Post DHL's expansion of its Hamburg parcel center includes the addition of a new hall for postal services, increasing its hourly capacity by 20,000 parcels and making it one of the group's largest parcel centers in Germany. With this upgrade, residents in the Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regions can greatly benefit from the improved and reliable services offered by DHL.
