Trade union - DGB sees debt brake as reason for ailing infrastructure

The German Trade Union Confederation is calling for a change to the debt brake and more money for infrastructure. "The ubiquitously visible dilapidated public infrastructure is the direct consequence of the debt brake," criticized DGB district head Mehrdad Payandeh on Thursday and warned: "Austerity reflexes could break the back of our economy."

In view of the climate and energy crisis, pennies are not the way forward. It was therefore sensible to reform the debt brake and allow loans for investments. At the very least, a special fund should be set up for this purpose, similar to what the federal government has decided for the rearmament of the Bundeswehr.

The call for changes to the debt brake and increased funding for infrastructure in Lower Saxony is being advocated by the DGB, citing the poor state of public infrastructure as a direct result of the debt brake. To address the climate and energy crisis, it would be more beneficial to reform the debt brake and allow loans for investments, akin to the formation of a special fund for rearmament of the Bundeswehr. Trade unions, including the DGB in Hanover, emphasize that austerity measures could potentially hinder the economic growth of the region.
