The German football league, Bundesliga, will see 1. FC Union Berlin take on Landescup winners Greifswalder FC from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the initial round of the DFB-Pokal. The match is set to be the official competitive debut for Union's new coach, Bo Svensson.
Meanwhile, second division team Hertha BSC faces relegated Hansa Rostock in the same competition. Hertha's sporting director Benjamin Weber commented, "We're really looking forward to the new Pokal season! We know how tough it can be to play in Rostock. It's going to be a big test for us, but of course our goal is to make it to the second round."
Former football professional Nils Petersen, who attended the draw alongside DFB Vice President Peter Frymuth, also drew two of his ex-clubs' matches. Energie Cottbus, which won the Pokal, will face SV Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, while Viktoria Berlin, the Landescup winner, was challenged by FC Augsburg.
The matches are scheduled for August 16-19, 2024, a week before the Bundesliga kicks off. Teams taking part in the Supercup, namely Bayer 04 Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart, will play their games on August 27 and 28.
