Europa League - Despite missing out on victory: Freiburg "mostly satisfied"

Despite missing out on winning their group, the SC Freiburg players drew a positive conclusion after their Europa League games so far. "For the most part, we can be satisfied with the group stage," defender Matthias Ginter told TV station RTL after the 2-0 defeat to West Ham United in London on Thursday evening. For the 29-year-old, the setback at the end of the preliminary round was also due to a lack of strength. "It's true that we were all at our limit after all those games. We also had a lot of injured players this season."

However, coach Christian Streich did not believe that too much respect was the reason why Freiburg were unable to put the English Premier League club under any pressure. "That was a deserved defeat, West Ham were better," he said. "We didn't have the quality in our passing and positional play to be dangerous."

The Bundesliga eighth-placed team must now play in the intermediate round in mid-February. Streich does not have a favorite ticket. "All trips are special for me. I take everything with me," he said.

Before Christmas, SC will face 1. FC Köln at home this Sunday and promoted 1. FC Heidenheim on Wednesday. "We have an important game against Cologne and we want to win that," said Vincenzo Grifo.
