- Despite minimal decreases in CO2 emissions in Bremen.
In Bremen, emissions of harmful CO2 have shown minimal reduction. As per the environmental department's data from 2022, approximately 10.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide were released, marking a slight decrease of 0.2% compared to the previous year. This decline was highlighted by Environment Senator Kathrin Moosdorf (Greens), who underlined the necessity of more aggressive CO2 reduction actions.
Households, businesses, and commerce have displayed a noticeable decrease in CO2 consumption lately, primarily due to the uptick in energy prices post-Ukraine war and the favorable climate conditions. On the other hand, traffic and energy production emissions have seen an upsurge. The reason for this is the growing number of travelers and the increased usage of coal instead of gas in power generation, following the pandemic.
Bremen targets to transform into a completely climate-neutral state by 2038, free of any CO2 emission. A significant milestone is set to be achieved in 2030 - by this time, emissions must be nearly halved. The Action Plan Climate Protection is designed to help attain this challenging objective.
Despite the decrease in household, business, and commercial CO2 consumption, the overall environmental pollution due to environmental pollution sources like traffic and energy production continues to rise. Consequently, Bremen's environmental department must implement more stringent policies to meet the goal of becoming completely climate-neutral by 2038, reducing emissions by nearly half by 2030, as outlined in the Action Plan Climate Protection.
