Despite catching up: Coach Streich annoyed by goals conceded by Freiburg
Despite Vincenzo Grifo's late equalizer in the Bundesliga match against Borussia Mönchengladbach, SC Freiburg coach Christian Streich was annoyed. He was particularly displeased with his team's defensive behavior. "I'm absolutely unhappy with the way we set up our opponents with poor defensive behavior," he said after the 3:3 (1:3) on Saturday.
Gladbach equalized Lucas Höler's early opening goal through Jordan Siebatcheu (25'). Alassane Plea (29) and Julian Weigl (39, penalty) turned the game around before the break. "We know the pattern of conceding the first goal and then getting one of those. That's not possible, that's not possible," said Streich. "The second goal comes in a transition game and then the penalty - you sit in the dressing room and think you're watching the wrong movie."
However, Freiburg regained control after the break. "What the team then managed to do: they didn't lose their heads," said the coach. "We were all down. But the boys managed to maintain structure, win duels and build up pressure."
That was rewarded: Substitute Noah Weißhaupt scored the 2:3 and Grifo equalized with a penalty in the sixth minute of stoppage time. "In the end, it's very good for us and very, very well deserved," said Streich, who praised the reaction after the 3-1 defeat in the DFB Cup against second-division side SC Paderborn. "But we can't concede three goals every time and then believe that we can still win," he said.
Despite SC Freiburg managing to secure a draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga, conceding three goals was a concern for coach Christian Streich. Even in their next Bundesliga match against SC Freiburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach will aim to capitalize on their past success, having scored multiple times against the Freiburg defense.
