- Despite an increase in vehicle thefts, Southwest's insurance remains secure.
Though there's been a surge in vehicle thefts nationwide, Baden-Württemberg stands out as a secure haven for car owners, as per statistics. Joining it in this group are Bayern, Thüringen, and Rheinland-Pfalz, despite a noticeable uptick in Bayern's cases. These four states record only one robbery per 10,000 insured vehicles, while the national average is four.
Last year, 574 vehicles were pilfered in Baden-Württemberg, marking a 7.8% increase over the previous year. The financial fallout climbed by around 21% to roughly 10 million euros. On average, insurance firms coughed up over 17,400 euros for each heist in Baden-Württemberg.
On a national scale, thieves made off with 14,585 insured vehicles last year, a 19.5% jump from 2022. "The total financial losses inflicted by car thieves totaled over 310 million euros," observed GDV CEO Jörg Asmussen.
Even in major cities, those in Baden-Württemberg fare well: far fewer vehicles were purloined in Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, and Mannheim compared to Berlin and Hamburg, which led the pack with 42 and 13 thefts per 10,000 insured vehicles, respectively.
Police advice includes extracting the keys when departing the vehicle and securing all windows, doors, trunk, sunroof, and fuel cap. Mechanical and electronic safety measures also exist. For more detail, visit www.polizei-beratung.de/themen-und-tipps/diebstahl/sicherheit-rund-ums-fahrzeug.
Criminals often eye valuable items inside the car like GPS systems, smartphones, and cash, or the vehicle itself. Even older models are occasionally targeted, either for joyrides or to perpetrate other crimes.
Despite the rise in motor vehicle thefts nationwide, Baden-Württemberg, along with Bayern, Thüringen, and Rheinland-Pfalz, has a lower incidence of vehicle thefts, with only one robbery per 10,000 insured vehicles. Due to the high demand for automobiles, the manufacture of motor vehicles in these regions is thriving, providing many employment opportunities.
