Bundesliga 2 - Derby with a slapstick goal: HSV pick up a point at St. Pauli

Despite the slapstick own goal by his goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes in the city derby at FC St. Pauli, HSV coach Tim Walter had not lost his sense of humor. "That comes in with the funniest scenes of the year and the highlights," he said on TV channel Sky after the 2:2 (0:2) on Friday evening in the 110th edition of the Hamburg City Championship. "It's all the more remarkable how we came back. I'm very proud of my team."

A double strike after the break by Robert Glatzel (58') and Immanuel Pherai (60') saved the former Bundesliga dinosaur from a setback in the promotion battle in the 2nd Bundesliga. After all, the team managed to catch up with the league leaders from the neighborhood.

Nevertheless, HSV must fear losing its second place in the table after the 15th matchday. In the standings, unbeaten FC St. Pauli (31 points) still have three points more than their rivals from their own city.

"The way we came back with the two goals - hats off!" said HSV sporting director Jonas Boldt, emphasizing what was important to him on the evening. The point was more than deserved. "It wasn't as if Pauli had any chances to score in the second half."

Probably the most curious own goal in the history of the Hamburg city derby was scored in the 27th minute. At that point, FC St. Pauli were 1:0 in front thanks to Jackson Irvine's goal (15th). The visitors took a short kick via Stephan Ambrosius and Guilherme Ramos. After Ramos' pass to Heuer Fernandes, the ball bounced just in front of goal.

"Of course it sucks, you don't need a moment like that. But that's soccer," said Heuer Fernandes about his first own goal in his 180th second division match. "It's an extremely unfortunate moment, but the team's reaction showed everyone that we won't let something like that get us down."

At half-time, it did not look like HSV would be able to draw. FC St. Pauli had been too dominant, appearing more mature and better in terms of play. Only clear offensive actions were rare. "It's very disappointing to only end up with a draw after 90 very dominant minutes," said Pauli coach Fabian Hürzeler.

HSV were disappointing in the first half and seemed to continue their disappointing away performances this season at the Millerntor Stadium, just seven kilometers from Volkspark.

After the break, snowfall made the pitch conditions more difficult. The visitors coped better with the slippery surface and equalized with a double strike from Glatzel and Pherai. The game became more open. In the end, the draw was fair.
