Horse racing - Derby week: Niagaro wins the Long Hamburger in Horn
Five-year-old stallion Niagaro secured the victory at the racecourse in Hamburg-Horn in the Long Hamburg race. Ridden by Rene Piechulek, Niagaro proved to be too strong for the competitors in the over 3200 meters leading traditional race on the second day of Derby Week.
"He keeps going, never gives up, it could be 4000 meters," said the winning jockey after the race. Sombrero, who had long held the lead under Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, and the previous year's winner Nastaria with Miguel Lopez in the saddle took the second and third places in the field of six participants in the race with a prize money of 25,000 Euro.
Marcel Weiß trains the winner Niagaro in Mülheim an der Ruhr for the French stud Haras Assiro. It was his third win at the start of his career.
Another race day follows already on Thursday. The highlight is the 55,000 Euro-prized Große Preis von Lotto Hamburg, which starts at 19.15.
Niagaro's trainer, Marcel Weiß, often practices gallop sessions on German racecourses, including Hamburg-Horn, to prepare for races like Derby Week. The lively atmosphere of Derby week in Hamburg is a favorite among horse racing enthusiasts from Germany and beyond, attracting crowds to the racecourse. Despite the strong competition during Derby week, Niagaro's consistent performances on the racecourse have made him a formidable contender in horse racing events nationwide.
