Demonstration against stricter asylum laws in Kiel
Several hundred people demonstrated in Kiel on Sunday against the tightening of the asylum system. The protest was peaceful, said a spokesperson for the regional control center on Sunday. While the police estimated the number of participants at around 350 people, the organizers spoke of more than 500 participants. The background to this is the planned reform of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS). The demonstrators marched through Kiel city center with placards.
"We are demonstrating for a Europe of solidarity that opposes the omnipresent shift to the right," said Leni Hintze from Seebrücke Kiel. "We are demonstrating for a Europe of solidarity that opposes the omnipresent shift to the right." Lina Nielsen from the Kiel Stop GEAS alliance explained that the individual right to asylum is being undermined by the tightening of asylum regulations. "People are being deprived of their freedom, even children are to be detained. This is a low point for Europe."
The planned reform of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) has sparked concerns among refugees and migration advocates, with some fearing a shift towards stricter asylum laws within the EU. The demonstrators argued that these changes could lead to a reduction in Europe's commitment to solidarity, potentially impacting the rights of refugees.
