Ukraine war - Demining vehicles from Hamburg in action in Ukraine

A Mine Sweeping Vehicle from Hamburg has arrived in Ukraine and is already in operation in the Charkiw region, according to the Hamburg Interior Ministry.

Hamburg Senator for the Interior, Andy Grote (SPD), handed over the first of four mine sweeping vehicles to the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, in mid-May. Three more are expected to follow by August.

With Russia's attack on Ukraine, more and more mines have been discovered on Ukrainian territory. A third of the Ukrainian land area is now considered mined, according to Ukrainian reports, covering approximately 174,000 square kilometers. Many unexploded ordnance have cost civilians, including children, their lives. The four mine sweeping vehicles can clear an area the size of approximately one football field of ordnance daily.

"We can see every day how important Hamburg's support for Ukraine continues to be," said Grote. Russian mines are among the greatest dangers the war brings to the population. "I am very happy that the first mine sweeping vehicle is now in operation in the particularly affected region of Charkiw and that we can contribute to saving lives in this way."

  1. The operation of the Mine Sweeping Vehicle from Hamburg in the Charkiw region of Ukraine is significant, given that two-thirds of Ukraine remains unaffected by mining, as reported by Ukrainian sources.
  2. SPD politician Andy Grote, who serves as Hamburg's Senator for the Interior, expressed his satisfaction with the arrival of Oleksiy Makeyev, the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, to receive the first of four mine sweeping vehicles from Hamburg.
  3. Despite Ukraine's efforts to prevent civilian casualties, Russian mines continue to pose a severe threat to the population, leading to the loss of innocent lives, including children.
  4. While surveying the conflicts in Ukraine, one cannot overlook the crucial role of support from allies like Hamburg, which is evident in the deployment of defense equipment, such as the mine sweeping vehicles, to help demining efforts.
