- Delivery of petitions calling for allotted instructional hours approval
A group advocating for educational vacation in Saxony presented 55,000 petitions to Saxony's State Parliament President, Matthias Rößler. According to Green Party state head Christin Furtenbacher, the significant volume of signatures is mainly a testament to the dedicated efforts of the numerous volunteers involved in the petition, surpassing the high threshold of 40,000 signatures required for a Saxony-based citizens' initiative. Saxony urgently necessitates a law governing educational leave. Besides Bavaria, it stands as the sole federal state lacking a legal right to educational leave.
Since September, a team comprising labor unions, political parties, churches, and various civil society organizations has amassed signatures for the citizens' initiative titled "5 Days of Learning Freedom for Saxony." The approval process is now underway. Should legislators decline the proposal, the petitioners have the option to instigate another citizens' initiative. This time, they must acquire at least 450,000 signatures within six months. If successful, it will result in a public vote.
The team backing the "5 Days of Learning Freedom for Saxony" initiative, which includes trade unions, is actively collecting signatures. If the initial proposal is rejected by legislators, another citizens' initiative must be initiated by the petitioners, requiring the support of trade unions and other organizations, with at least 450,000 signatures within six months, leading to a public vote.
