Delays in reporting the new livestock logo

Starting from the following year, it will be clearer where, for instance, pork comes from. A new logo is being implemented. The preparations are not running smoothly.

The implementation of the new animal husbandry logo is still delayed in Saxony-Anhalt.
The implementation of the new animal husbandry logo is still delayed in Saxony-Anhalt.

In preparations for the future state's animal husbandry logo for meat, there's still a hitch in implementation in Saxony-Anhalt. By August 1st, pig fattening farms were supposed to report their housing forms, as per the law. However, the conditions for submitting these reports are still being created in Saxony-Anhalt, the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed upon request.

However, there will be no impact on animal keepers, it was stated. The implementation is in the final phase. In a list by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, the responsible authorities for Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin, Bremen, and Hesse are still missing.

The law stipulates that from August 2025, a labeling of domestic products will be mandatory. It is set to begin with pork in supermarkets.

A system with five categories is planned when piglets are transferred to fattening. It starts with the housing form "Stall" with the legal minimum requirements. The "Stall+Outdoor" level provides 12.5% more space, "Fresh Air Stall" allows contact with the outdoor climate. Additionally, there are the levels "Pasture/Outdoor" and "Organic". Since 2019, supermarkets have already had a widely used voluntary labeling of the chains with the print "Housing Form" for the living conditions of animals, which includes beef, pork, and poultry.

Despite the delay in implementing the housing report system for pig fattening farms in Saxony-Anhalt, it's important to note that this doesn't affect the foodstuffs themselves. The labeling of domestic products, including pork, is still set to begin in supermarkets by August 2025, requiring foodstuffs to adhere to the new housing categories.
