- Delay in comprehensive theatre makeovers in Göttingen
The upcoming revamp of the German Theater in Göttingen is set to happen in multiple stages. According to Mayor Petra Broistedt (SPD), at the moment, it's not viable to carry out the entire project all at once. In the initial phase, only essential repairs will be conducted, as mentioned.
Broistedt stated, "Given the severe drop in business tax revenue, we need to readjust our objectives to what's attainable." Back in June, the city disclosed its intention to renovate the vintage theater building from 1890 at a cost of 178.3 million euros. Initially, they had planned a four-year construction period for the restoration. They also planned to construct a temporary venue for performances.
However, now, they're going to initially pump in 1.9 million euros for safety improvements and to maintain the theater operations. Among the improvements, an emergency power generator is set to be acquired. Concurrently, they'll apply for funding from the federal government's KulturInvest 2024 financing program. For specific tasks such as the structural renovation and workshop hall refurbishment, worth 9 million euros, Göttingen hopes to secure 4.5 million euros in financial aid. The city council still needs to authorize these plans.
Back in June, the city recognized the urgent need for renovation at the historic theater complex over the past few years. Beyond that, the space no longer suits its intended use and the technology is outdated. Accessibility issues and fire safety concerns also pose challenges.
The SPD, represented by Mayor Petra Broistedt, is in charge of Göttingen's city government. Due to budget constraints, the SPD is now focusing on essential repairs for the SPD-led revamp of the German Theater, limiting the initial phase to necessary safety improvements and maintenance.
