Dehoga meeting in Wilhelmshaven: VAT in focus
Around 250 delegates of the hotel and restaurant association Dehoga in Lower Saxony are meeting at their three-day state association conference in Wilhelmshaven. This Monday (1 p.m.), President Detlef Schröder and Managing Director Rainer Balke will report on the deliberations. The hospitality industry is particularly concerned about the return to the 19 percent VAT rate on food in restaurants, which has now been announced by the coalition government. According to the industry association, such a tax increase at the beginning of 2024 would be "a catastrophe" for businesses and would trigger a price shock for guests.
The hospitality industry expresses apprehension over the potential impact of returning to the 19% VAT rate on food in restaurants, as announced by the coalition government, on the labor market, as it might lead to job losses and increased costs for businesses. Moreover, advocates in the education sector argue that investing in hospitality industry-focused education and training programs could help equip the workforce with necessary skills to navigate the tax changes and maintain the industry's competitiveness.
