German Handball League - Defender Steffen Weinhold departs from THW Kiel.
Steffen Weinhold, a handball player, is leaving THW Kiel - the Bundesliga's reigning champions. The team announced his departure on Tuesday. A local newspaper had previously reported about his plans to leave. "I can't make it work here at THW Kiel, and neither can my family. We're being pulled back to the south," Weinhold told the paper.
Weinhold, who was born in Fürth, played for several teams before joining THW Kiel in 2014. He won numerous titles with THW Kiel, including four German championships and a Champions League trophy. On the national team, he achieved the European Championship in 2016 and a bronze medal at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
"Playing for this club for ten years has been an incredible honor for me," Weinhold said in a statement released by the team. His last home match will be against SC DHfK Leipzig on Wednesday (7:00 p.m./Dyn). The club plans to honor him with an official farewell at a later date, according to their statement.
