Inundation Occurs - Decreasing water levels: Top reported level to be exceeded soon
After the floods, the water levels of rivers in many regions of Bavaria have gone down. The flood situation is slowly getting better, as stated by the Flood Information Service (HND) on Saturday. However, some water levels might increase again due to more rain.
The highest alert level 4 has been surpassed at the Danube in Lower Bavaria in Hofkirchen and Vilshofen, as per the HND. This alert level forewarns of extensive flooding in urban areas. The HND predicts that the highest alert level will be attained again on Saturday, although not everywhere.
The water level of the Danube has also dropped in Passau, Straubing, and Deggendorf, mentioned the HND. The water level at the Donau measuring point in Passau was measured at 8.29 meters on Saturday - this represents alert level 3. On Tuesday, the water level reached 9.99 meters due to rainfall, whereas a typical water level would be approximately 5.50 meters.
The German Weather Service forecasts thunderstorms with heavy rain and local storms in the southwest in the afternoon. Consequently, the experts at the HND anticipate an increase in the Isar in Munich, Lenggries, and Egling - up to alert level 1, where the water overflows the bank. On the other hand, at some measuring points, the HND also expects an increase to the second alert level, where agricultural land may be flooded. Such instances include Plattling and Pegel Inkofen / Amper.
Although there are plans for more rain, the flood situation is expected to continue to improve overall. "The local thunderstorm rainfall will not have a lasting impact," said the HND on Saturday. Nevertheless, widespread exceeding of alert levels could occur overnight on Monday.
