- Decreasing number of Christmas trees in Lower Saxony
This year, the supply of Christmas trees in Lower Saxony and Bremen is rather limited. As a result, some tree sellers might boost their prices by up to 4 euros per tree, suggests expert Benedikt Schneebecke from Ostseetanne. But have no fear, the tree-less won't be a reality.
Basically, the price scale should remain relatively similar to last year's. A Nordmann fir would cost between 22 to 29 euros per running meter, while blue and red spruce would set you back 13 to 18 and 10 to 15 euros respectively, as per Schneebecke's analysis.
However, the blue spruce might see a slight bump in price due to its shortage. Schneebecke notes that even though a two-meter tall tree has been nurtured for around twelve years, its price is barely more than a bouquet of blooms. Presently, Christmas tree manufacturers are in talks with both wholesalers and retailers about their rates.
Schneebecke points to the dry years of 2017 and 2018, where numerous young trees perished, as well as discounted prices, high retailer profits, and skyrocketing manufacturing costs, as some of the reasons why the supply is low. Consequently, Christmas tree growers have decreased their farm areas or have left the business altogether, leading to a moderate price hike among producers. Ultimately, it's up to major retailers such as garden centers to decide whether these increased costs will be transferred to consumers.
Despite the moderate price hike among producers due to reduced supply, Christmas tree growers are hopeful that prices won't significantly increase on Christmas Eve. Some retailers might choose to absorb these costs to maintain affordable prices for their customers on this special occasion.
