Decrease in Unemployment in North Rhine-Westphalia

In Germany's largest federal state, there were fewer individuals recorded as jobless in May compared to the previous month. In contrast, a year ago, the unemployment rate in NRW was still lower.

Employment sector - Decrease in Unemployment in North Rhine-Westphalia

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the number of people unemployed dropped by about 4,200 in May when compared to April, resulting in approximately 739,000 jobless individuals. The unemployment rate also decreased by 0.1 percentage point to 7.4%, as per the Regional Directorate of the Federal Employment Agency in Düsseldorf. A year ago, this rate stood at 7.1%. The statistics were calculated based on data available up till May 15th.

The spring months of March to May saw a weaker balance compared to the long-term average mentioned the agency. "Nonetheless, the NRW labor market showed a slight improvement when directly compared to the previous year," they added.

The Employment Agency reported that the number of socially insured workers in North Rhine-Westphalia had reached a record high for this time of year, with 7.332 million male and female employees in total. They also observed an increase in the employment of refugees from Ukraine.

Roland Schüßler, Chairman of the Management Board of the Federal Employment Agency for North Rhine-Westphalia, stated, "The labor market in North Rhine-Westphalia has started to move faster again during the spring revival, with May and the last few months seeing accelerated growth. However, this has been drastically hampered by the poor economic situation."

Employers in North Rhine-Westphalia are remaining cautious about hiring new staff. "On the positive side, though, over 3,200 individuals or 9% more were able to secure a new job compared to the previous year in May."
