Debut in Braunschweig: Scherning's reunion with VfL
The second division basement duel between bottom-placed Eintracht Braunschweig and penultimate-placed VfL Osnabrück is a very special match for one player in particular: Daniel Scherning will face his former club in his first match as Braunschweig coach this Saturday (13:00/Sky).
The 40-year-old coached VfL from July 2021 to August 2022, building a completely new team in Osnabrück following the club's relegation from the second division in 2021. In hindsight, his move to Arminia Bielefeld was a mistake.
"If I go through the team, I think 15 players played under me and were also transferred by me," said Scherning about the reunion with the Osnabrückers. "Of course, there were also reactions from the team in my direction. The direction was: Congratulations - but only from Sunday."
At his first press conference in Braunschweig, Scherning refuted reports that he had alienated many in Osnabrück with his abrupt move to Bielefeld. "There was already a farewell from the team, even if the change - as is sometimes the case in sport - had to happen relatively quickly," he said. "VfL did everything right by choosing Tobias Schweinsteiger. He has risen under him and has also developed further this season."
In his previous role at VfL Osnabrück, Daniel Scherning played a significant part in shaping the team, as 15 of its players had been coached and transferred by him. This Saturday, he returns to face his former club in a Bundesliga 2 match, as Eintracht Braunschweig hosts VfL Osnabrück.
