Education - Debate on return to G9: How is the state positioning itself?

Following the Citizens' Forum's recommendation on the future of grammar schools in Baden-Württemberg, it is eagerly awaited how Minister President Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) will position himself in the debate on the duration of grammar schools. At the weekly state press conference (12 noon) on Tuesday, the main focus is likely to be on how the state government will deal with the Citizens' Forum's report and what conclusions it will draw from the recommendations.

On Monday, a citizens' forum convened by the state government recommended a return to a nine-year grammar school. According to the report, 49 of the 55 randomly selected citizens were in favor of a "new G9" becoming the norm at grammar schools in the state. However, according to the forum, at least one grammar school per district should also offer a G8 course. At the same time, the citizens' forum spoke out in favor of a "holistic, cross-school type school reform". In the coming year, the state parliament will also have to deal with a petition by a parents' initiative to force a return to G9.

The eight-year grammar school is currently the standard in Baden-Württemberg. It was once introduced to make pupils more competitive internationally. G9 now only exists as a pilot project at 44 state schools and at some private schools. A return to G9 has been discussed and debated for a long time, but the Green-Black coalition has agreed in the coalition agreement that it does not want to conduct any structural debates.

Kretschmann emphasized on Monday that the recommendations and the report by the Citizens' Forum would be looked at closely and the arguments and ideas would be "dealt with intensively".

His coalition partner had already gone further. "We need a holistic update for our education system," CDU party and parliamentary group leader Manuel Hagel said on Monday. The schools in Baden-Württemberg need to become top class again. "I am campaigning for us to look at all key areas of education and focus on this vision," said Hagel. On Tuesday, the leaders of the green-black coalition wanted to discuss the next steps.

The Green-led state government of Baden-Württemberg, under the leadership of Minister President Winfried Kretschmann, will need to consider the Citizens' Forum's recommendation to reintroduce the nine-year grammar school (G9) in Stuttgart and other cities. The report suggests a majority of 49 out of 55 citizens favor a return to G9, with at least one G8 option per district. The state parliament will also consider a petition next year pushing for a G9 return. Kretschmann has promised to scrutinize the report carefully, while CDU leader Manuel Hagel calls for a comprehensive education system update.
