Process - Death of 2000 pigs: court reserves the right to impose a fine
A 28-year-old man has been cautioned by the court for the death of around 2000 pigs at a Nordhausen fattening farm. On Monday, the district court in Nordhausen reserved the right to impose a fine on the former employee of the company. The defendant must pay 300 euros to an animal welfare organization and remain unpunished for one year, otherwise 80 daily fines of 50 euros each are due. With this verdict, the court followed the concurring motions of the prosecution and defense.
The 28-year-old was cautioned for violating the Animal Welfare Act in conjunction with criminal damage to property. In the summer of 2022, around 2,000 pigs that were kept in stalls without windows died in a fattening farm as a result of a defective ventilation system. The court justified its decision by stating that the defendant had not gone to the site despite several ventilation alarms during his on-call duty. Although he could not have repaired the ventilation system due to his lack of electrical knowledge, he could have alerted the police or fire department.
The defense called on the public prosecutor's office to carry out further investigations in order to hold those responsible within the company accountable.

The violation of animal welfare laws and property damage led to the death of 2000 pigs in a Nordhausen fattening plant. The local court reserved the right to fine the 28-year-old former employee, who was cautioned for his negligence during an on-call duty. The pig deaths occurred due to a faulty ventilation system, and despite several alarms, the defendant failed to take necessary action or alert the authorities. The public prosecutor's office was urged by the defense to conduct further investigations to hold accountable those within the company responsible for the defective fattening plant.
