Dealing with abuse in convalescent homes
It is a dark chapter in post-war history: between 1945 and 1980, millions of children were sent to the sea or the mountains without their parents to be nursed back to health. Many experienced mental and physical abuse in the convalescent homes and returned traumatized. The spa town of Bad Salzdetfurth in Lower Saxony was also a destination for the children's deportation.
From this Thursday to Sunday, those affected and academics will come together here for the national congress "Aufarbeitung Kinderverschickung". Among others, three of those affected will talk about their experiences as children at the Waldhaus in Bad Salzdetfurth, according to the organizers.
Within the space of a few months in 1969, a three-year-old was beaten to death by three six-year-old boys in the home, a seven-year-old choked on vomit and a girl died as a result of an infection. According to a study commissioned by Diakonie, negligence can be assumed in all of the deaths, at least to some extent.
The investigation into historical instances of child abuse in convalescent homes has significant implications for our understanding of post-war social affairs. Addressing health concerns and promoting mental well-being among children is crucial for fostering a healthier future in society.
