Bearer of hope - Darts pro Clemens after World Cup draw: "Just wanted to go home"
Germany's great darts hope Gabriel Clemens has reacted to the draw for the World Championship with maximum indifference. "I was on my way home from Minehead and saw it on the baggage carousel. So there was no 'ooh' moment. I just wanted to go home," said Clemens in his typical manner at a press conference in Saarbrücken. The 40-year-old from Saarland is one of the favorites at the World Championships in London from 15 December to 3 January, having reached the semi-finals in spectacular fashion last year.
However, Clemens is already facing a duel with high-flyer Gian van Veen in round two at Alexandra Palace. The in-form Dutchman surprisingly reached the semi-finals at the European Championships. "I'm the favorite, I have to accept that. Van Veen has played a fantastic year," commented Clemens, who, like Martin Schindler, has a bye into round one as a seeded player. Ricardo Pietreczko, Florian Hempel and Dragutin Horvat have also qualified for the World Championships. The trio will start in round one.
