Soccer - Darmstadt wants to be "brave and bold" in Heidenheim

Torsten Lieberknecht struck a brash tone ahead of SV Darmstadt 98's Bundesliga clash with fellow promoted side 1. FC Heidenheim. "The big headline is: We want to remain bold and cheeky," said the Lilies coach on Thursday. "And we mustn't be impressed if one or two things don't work out."

A win at Heidenheim on Saturday (15:30/Sky) would see the South Hessians overtake their rivals from the Ostalb in the table. However, their last success was two months ago. Most recently, the Hessians suffered a painful 0:1 at the Böllenfalltor against 1. FC Köln.

Darmstadt are still on nine points ahead of the 14th matchday. However, the relegation candidates will not let this put them off. "We're in the game. And it's important that we stay in it for a long time," explained Lieberknecht. "Many on the outside had feared that we might not have a chance at all. We were able to disprove that." You have to have a lot of patience this season and be able to endure a lot.

Heidenheim and Darmstadt know each other well from their time in the second division - the two coaches even longer: Frank Schmidt (then at 1. FC Nürnberg) and Lieberknecht (1. FC Kaiserslautern) once played together in the German U20 national team at the 1993 World Cup in Australia.

Lieberknecht has a long list of absentees ahead of the game in Heidenheim: Marvin Mehlem, Braydon Manu, Fraser Hornby, Matthias Bader, Christoph Zimmermann and Fabian Nürnberger, who suffered an ankle blister in the Cologne game, are all missing. "Every player who misses out through injury hurts us. But we've never felt sorry for ourselves in recent years," emphasized the Lilies coach.
