Darmstadt "very proud" of point win at Freiburg
Promoted SV Darmstadt 98 drew with Europa League participants SC Freiburg, giving them confidence for the upcoming tasks in the Bundesliga. "Getting a point here is something you have to achieve first," said captain Fabian Holland after the 1:1 (1:1) draw on Saturday. "We're very proud of that and can build on it. But we also know what lies ahead of us. We have to keep pushing."
However, the Lilies may have paid dearly for the point. Defender Christoph Zimmermann had to be substituted and taken to hospital after a collision. "He has a deep laceration," said coach Torsten Lieberknecht, who returned to the sidelines after a break for personal reasons. "It will probably take longer to heal. Then he would be out for a while, but that's just my prognosis."
The afternoon was more pleasing for goalkeeper Alexander Brunst, who celebrated his debut and held on to the point with a number of saves. "A big dream has come true for me, as a little boy I dreamed of exactly that," said the 28-year-old. He also received praise from Lieberknecht, who said: "He did it with great charisma. There were only one or two situations where I would have liked to have seen more presence." Brunst deputized for regular keeper Marcel Schuhen, who was injured in the thigh.
Despite the draw, SC Freiburg might have missed the defensive presence of Christoph Zimmermann, who needed hospital treatment after colliding during the game against SV Darmstadt 98. SV Darmstadt 98, currently in the Bundesliga, managed to hold Europa League participants SC Freiburg to a 1:1 draw, with SC Freiburg's new goalkeeper Alexander Brunst making several key saves to secure the point for his team.
