Dardai satisfied despite minus bill

Hertha BSC go into the Christmas break with the good feeling of nine games without defeat. Even a clean sheet won't shake the Berliners. Coach Dardai makes his own calculations.

2nd league - Dardai satisfied despite minus bill

Pal Dardai and mathematics have always been a special affair. With his Christmas calculation after the poor 0-0 draw against VfL Osnabrück, the Hertha BSC coach once again found an original formula at the end of the first half of the second division. Perhaps, Dardai thought on the press podium at the Olympiastadion, a point against the bottom team from Lower Saxony was even better than three. Otherwise everyone in Berlin would only be talking about promotion to the Bundesliga again.

But Dardai wants to work as calmly as possible. After all, the past soccer year was exciting enough. After his "Dardai calculation", the Hungarian stated a half-year balance of minus two points. The fact remains: There is still room for improvement.

That's how the unhappy Florian Niederlechner, who was furious with the video referee, summed it up. "I believe that everything is open in the second half of the season. We'll step on the gas in the training camp and do everything we can to attack at the top. Full attack in the second half of the season." Captain Toni Leistner had quickly internalized Hertha's tactics from the slipstream of mid-table and stated: "The role of the hunter suits us quite well."

The defensive boss had his work cut out for him. He marched towards the catacombs with one of the crates of beer donated by the fans in the Ostkurve. With his speech of thanks to the supporters of the long-suffering Berlin second division club, the defensive boss had struck the right note on the pitch shortly beforehand. "Thank you for the support," was the key message. The general feeling of relief drives everyone at Hertha.

"We also have to enjoy the day. We have achieved more than I thought before the season. We can be happy as Hertha fans," said Dardai. With nine games without defeat, the run of eight unbeaten games under him from the final spurt of the 2021 season was topped, when Dardai indulged in the now legendary cigar in a TV interview. The club record of 21 consecutive unbeaten games from the 2012/13 promotion season is still a long way off. If it is broken, a return to the Bundesliga will become a real scenario.

Nobody, not even visiting coach Uwe Koschinat, played down the Reese factor against Osnabrück. The absence of exceptional player Fabian Reese due to a cold underlined the importance of the winger for the Berliners. "I'd be lying if I said that didn't affect us," said the VfL coach. Dardai had hoped for the 26-year-old until breakfast, but then came the news that Reese not only had a cold, but also a fever.

The fans' unusual gifts of beer also delighted the swearing Niederlechner ("Fucking video referee") as a prelude to the Christmas party that followed. Check it off, promised Dardai's body language. The Hungarian wished everyone a Merry Christmas. From January onwards: "We have to keep working hard." And probably also count again.
