- Dangerous substances: four people injured
In a hazardous material release at a laundry facility in Blaichach (district of Oberallgäu), four people were injured. An employee was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, police said. Three others in the neighboring building were lightly injured by the hazardous material release. Firefighters, emergency services, and police responded to the scene in the morning. The Technical Relief Agency (THW) was also present.
Industrial Accident: Chemical Substance Leaks from Container
Police said hazardous vapors had escaped from the building. They believe it was an industrial accident: A chemical substance leaked from a container holding about 1,000 liters, reacting with another substance to create harmful ones. A police spokesperson declined to name the substance.
A firefighter spokesperson said there was a warning for the population in the Blaichach North area. However, the police spokesperson said there was no danger. Firefighters are currently binding the substance to prevent further release of hazardous vapors. There is an "unremarkable, vinegar-like smell" around the laundry facility, police said.
Police advise keeping windows and doors closed
Police advised on the X platform: "Keep windows and doors closed." They also suggested turning off ventilation and air conditioning. No evacuation measures are expected, police said initially. However, a neighboring campsite was partially evacuated. Campers were able to return to their sites later in the morning. Police did not provide numbers of those affected.
Police said around 180 firefighters, about 45 emergency service personnel, around 25 THW personnel, and several police units were at the scene. Investigations continue.
Firefighters played a crucial role in managing the hazardous material release, initiating procedures for firefighting to contain the harmful vapors. Due to the leak, the Technical Relief Agency (THW) was instrumental in binding the substance to prevent any further releases.
