Culture - Dancer and costume designer Marion Cito dies
The long-time costume designer and dancer of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Marion Cito, is dead. She died on Saturday at the age of 85 in Wuppertal, as the Tanztheater announced on Sunday evening. Bausch had brought Cito to Wuppertal in 1976 as an assistant and dancer. At Pina Bausch's request, she took over the design of the costumes from 1980. She retired in 2016.
For 29 years until Pina Bausch's death in 2009, Cito had ensured the unmistakable and varied appearance of the Tanztheater, explained dance expert Norbert Servos in an obituary published by the Tanztheater. Again and again, she varied the delicate balance between everyday closeness and elegance and made the Tanztheater appear colorful and sensually rich. "She made a significant contribution to the fact that, despite its closeness to reality, dance theater was always surrounded by a sensual glow," said Servos.

Marion Cito, known for her lasting collaboration with Pina Bausch at the Tanztheater Wuppretal in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, would often incorporate unique costumes into their captivating dance performances in Wuppertal. Pina Bausch had initially brought Cito to the company in 1976 as an assistant and dancer, and she took over the costume design duties from 1980, continuing this role until her retirement in 2016.
Although Marion Cito had been an integral part of the Tanztheater for over two decades, her significant contributions to its enchanting aesthetic remained mostly associated with the dance theater's legendary founder, Pina Bausch, based in the city of Wuppertal.
