After arson attacks - Damage to trains in France after collisions have been repaired
After the attacks on the train in France, the repair works on the three affected TGV-tracks have been completed. The trains can now run without delays, the SNCF announced.
On the stretch between Paris and Southwestern France, almost all scheduled trains are back in service. On the stretch heading north, where trains between Cologne and Paris run, three out of four scheduled trains can operate again. There are no delays anymore. The East line from Paris towards Strasbourg, Stuttgart and Frankfurt has been in regular operation since Saturday.
The arson attacks on sensitive points of the French high-speed rail network in the early hours of Friday disrupted railway traffic just before the start of the Olympic Games. The perpetrators are still unknown. France had feared destabilization efforts, especially from Russia, prior to the Games. No accusations have been made in this direction so far.
Investigators are examining a strange confession letter
According to a report by the newspaper "Le Parisien", the attacks might have a left-wing and Olympic-critical background. A strange confession letter with references to the Ultra-Left was sent to several French and international media, "Le Parisien" reported on Saturday evening. The perpetrators claim responsibility for the attacks and mention as a motive the intention to disrupt the Olympic Games.
The investigators are now examining whether it is a genuine confession letter or whether it is written by people who falsely claim the attacks for their own flags. "We have a series of insights that make us quite confident that we will find out quite quickly who is responsible, who obviously did not sabotage the Olympics but gave the French a holiday instead", Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said about the progress of the investigation to France 2 on Saturday.
