DAK Health Insurance reports new record high for damages from billing fraud

In total, DAK investigators were able to recover 12.1 million Euro. With a total damage amount of 4.6 million Euro, home care was the most affected by fraud in the years 2022 and 2023. The reason for this, according to DAK, was high costs in the intensive care sector and a lack of qualified personnel. Right behind that was fraud in the billing of medical supplies and medications, causing a damage of 4.5 million Euro.

The significant increase in damages compared to the previous two-year period 2020/2021 was also attributed by DAK to the Coronapandemic, during which the quality and billing checks of the Medical Services were suspended. DAK, which is one of the largest statutory health insurances in Germany, reportedly has 5.5 million insured persons.

Despite the recovery of 12.1 million Euro by DAK investigators, the 'Highest value' of damages still amounted to 4.6 million Euro in home care during 2022 and 2023. This led to a discussion about potential 'Accounting fraud' within the sector. Interestingly, Hamburg, known for its vibrant healthcare industry, had a share in these damages.
