How to Play Wordle

The official Wordle game is located here on the New York Times website. A new puzzle becomes available every day at midnight, in your local time.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The color of the letters will change based on their correspondence in the day's secret word. Green indicates that the letter is correct and in the right position. Yellow suggests that you have the right letter but in the wrong spot. Gray means the letter is not present in the secret word at all. For more information, check out our guide to playing Wordle here and my strategy guide here for more advanced tips. The Answer to Yesterday's Wordle was "STORM."

A Primer on Wordle Basics

The basic concept of Wordle is to guess the day's secret word. When you first open the Wordle game, you'll see an empty grid of letters. It's up to you to make the first move by inputting any five-letter word.

Colors will help guide you by revealing clues about the word. Green suggests that you correctly guessed a letter and its position. Yellow reveals that the letter is somewhere in the word but in the wrong position. Gray indicates that the letter is not found within the solution word at all. Use these clues to proceed and eliminate possibilities. You have six attempts, and then the game ends.

The Best Starter Words for Wordle

What should be your opening move? Choose words containing common letters, as this increases the likelihood of receiving yellow and green squares to guide your guesses. It's helpful even if you receive all gray squares, as this information can help you rule out possibilities. The ideal starting word varies, but popular picks include:

  • CRANE
  • TRACE
  • SLANT
  • CRATE
  • CARTE

Other worthy selections include "ARISE" or "ROUND." Words like "ADIEU" or "AUDIO" incorporate more vowels, but it's generally better to emphasize consonants with a starter like "RENT" or "CLAMP." Select your strategy and see how it fares.

The primary difference between Wordle winners and Wordle losers is their ability to leverage their guesses to gather information on the letters and their positions in the secret word. Use your guesses effectively to gather crucial information and improve your chances of winning.

Additional strategy advice: The initial Wordle utilized a database of approximately 2,300 solution words, but following its acquisition by the NYT, it now includes an editor who personally selects the solutions. Occasionally, these choices can be somewhat challenging words that might not have been included in the original list, and other times, they are relevant to current events. For instance, "FEAST" was the answer on one Thanksgiving occasion. Take note that a theme might be present.

Wordle alternatives, if you're still hooked on five-letter word games:

For those of you who simply can't get enough of five-letter guessing games, the top-rated Wordle alternatives, arranged by complexity, include:

  • Wheeldle, which enables you to play consecutive puzzles
  • Dordle and Quordle, where you must simultaneously solve two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles with the same guesses. Also available are Octordle, with eight puzzles, and Sedecordle, with 16
  • Waffle, which displays several five-letter words, jumbled in a grid; you advance by switching the letters until you solve
  • Absurdle, which alter the solution with each guess, but requires consistency with its previous feedback. Your goal is to corner it with strategic guessing, ultimately revealing the single possible answer, and thus victory
  • Squabble, where you face off against other players in Wordle with a timer; you take damage if you linger between guesses, and the last one standing emerges victorious
  • Antiwordle, where your mission is to avoid guessing the day’s solution. You are required to reuse any correctly guessed letters, which makes it more difficult as time progresses, making you a better player in this game
