Yesterday's Wordle Answer

Yesterday's Wordle was quite straightforward. The hint was "something weak or barely perceptible," and the answer included four common letters and one relatively common letter.

Yesterday's Wordle answer was FAINT.

Wordle Basics: A Quick Overview

The goal is to guess today's secret word. When you start the Wordle game, you'll see an empty grid of letters. It's your responsibility to initiate movement: type in any five-letter word.

The colors revealed help guide your guessing: Green signals a correct letter in the correct position. (For example, if you guess PARTY, and the secret word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.)

  • Yellow means the letter is in the word, but it's in the wrong place. (If you guess PARTY and the word is ROAST, the R, A, and T will be yellow.)
  • Gray demonstrates that the letter is not in the word at all. (If you guess PARTY and everything appears in gray, then the answer cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

Try and find the right word before you exhaust your six attempts.

The Best First Guesses for Wordle

What should you start with? The best initial choices focus on common letters, enhancing the likelihood of getting yellow and green squares to aid your guessing. Even if you end up with only grays, this information is still valuable in ruling out possibilities. There isn't a single "best" starting word, but the New York Times's Wordle analysis bot suggests starting with one of these:

  • CRANE
  • TRACE
  • SLANT
  • CRATE
  • CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that you can eliminate the most possibilities in the first round by starting with one of these:

  • SALET
  • REAST
  • TRACE
  • CRATE
  • SLATE

Other productive options could include ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO offer more vowels, but some argue starting with an emphasis on consonants may be more beneficial, employing starter words like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy and see how it pans out.

Winning at Wordle: Top Strategies

We have several Wordle strategy guides that you might want to explore if you're an avid player. These cover:

  • Using consonants to your advantage
  • A strategy based on common letters
  • A three-pronged approach for fishing for hints while maximizing your chances of winning quickly

The key difference between Wordle champions and Wordle losers is that victors successfully utilize their guesses to gather information about the letters in the word. Utilize this information to further your quest for the solution.

Additional tactical insight: Originally, Wordle utilized a list of approximately 2,300 potential solutions. However, following its acquisition by the NYT, the game now features an editor who meticulously selects the solutions. Sometimes, these choices are slightly intricate words that wouldn't have made the initial list, while other times they are relevant to current events. For instance, "FEAST" was the solution on Thanksgiving day. Remember that there might be a specific theme.

Other Wordle-inspired games

If you can't get enough of five-letter guessing games, the top Wordle alternatives, ranked by difficulty, include:

  • Wheeldle, which allows you to go through multiple puzzles consecutively
  • Dordle and Quordle, which challenge you to solve two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles concurrently, using the same set of guesses. Additionally, there's Octordle, with eight puzzles, and Sedecordle, with sixteen
  • Waffle, which displays multiple five-letter words, jumbled together in a grid; you win by interchanging the letters and solving the grid
  • Absurdle, which varies the solution after every guess, but must maintain consistency with previous feedback. You must skillfully maneuver it into a tight spot till only one possible solution remains; then, guess it and triumph
  • Squabble, a game in which you engage in Wordle matches against other players while a timer is ticking. You suffer damage if you delay between guesses; the winner is the last competitor standing
  • Antiwordle, a game in which your objective is to avoid guessing the day's solution**. You are required to use any letters that you, unfortunately, guessed correctly, making the game more challenging as time passes by, making you excel in the game
