A Heads Up about the Tricky Portions
While DRIVE, REVERSE, and PARK all imply shifting gears in a car, they don't all belong to the same categories today. PARK refers to a leisure spot, usually with trees and playground equipment.
You may sit in a DUGOUT while playing BASEBALL, but these words don't match today, either.
Today's blue section is labeled peculiarly, but I solved it by simply thinking about shapes.
What are the categories for today's Connections?
- Yellow: ACTIVATE CALL TO ACTION
- Green: UNO GAME CARDS
- Blue: HAIL YIELD COMPARISONS
- Purple: BENCH SEAT LOCATIONS

What's in the yellow group of Connections?
The yellow grouping is often the most straightforward. Today's yellow group is themed ACTIVATE CALL TO ACTION and encompasses the following words: DRIVE, PROMPT, PROPEL, PUSH.
Green group words
The green grouping is typically the second-easiest. The theme for today's green category is UNO GAME CARDS, and the words are: DRAW, REVERSE, SKIP, WILD.
Which words belong to the blue group in today's Connections?
The blue grouping is considered the second-hardest. The theme for today's blue group is HAIL SIZE COMPARISONS, and the words are: BASEBALL, GRAPEFRUIT, MARBLE, PEA.
What's the purple group of words for today's Connections?
The purple grouping is believed to be the most challenging. The theme for today's purple category is BENCH SEAT LOCATIONS, and the words are: COURTROOM, DUGOUT, GYM, PARK.
How I figured out today's Connections
DRIVE, PARK, and REVERSE seemed like driving modes to me, but I couldn't spot a fourth word for the group.
Aha! DRIVE fits with PUSH, PROMPT, and PROPEL as words that all prompt action. 🟨
BASEBALL, PEA, MARBLE, and GRAPEFRUIT are all round objects. Sure, it's simple, but it works, so let's go with it. 🟦 They're classified as HAIL SIZE COMPARISONS, according to NYT.
WILD, SKIP, REVERSE, and DRAW are all UNO cards. 🟩
Finally, DUGOUT, PARK, GYM, and COURTROOM - these are all locations offering benches. 🟪
How to play Connections
I've written a comprehensive guide to playing Connections, but for a refresher on the rules:
First, find the Connections game on the New York Times website or their Games app (formerly the Crossword app). On the game board, you'll find 16 tiles, each containing one word or phrase. Your mission is to identify a group of four tiles that share something in common, often as simple as being the same type of thing (such as RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW being various types of wet weather) or more complex involving wordplay (such as BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH being various types of lists).
Pick four objects and press the Submit button. If your guess is correct, the category and color will be unveiled. Yellow is the simplest, followed by green, then blue, and finally purple. If you're wrong, you'll have another chance.
Win by identifying all four categories. However, if you make four mistakes before concluding the game, the answers will be shown.
Winning at Connections
The key to winning Connections is understanding that the groupings can be deceiving. Expect to find overlapping groups. In one puzzle, it seemed that six breakfast foods were included: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. But BACON was part of a group of painters which also consisted of CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, and EGG was in a group of items coming in dozens (such as JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). Consequently, you should not submit your answer until you're certain that it only contains the four given objects.
If you're unable to solve a puzzle, try focusing on terms that do not seem to fit in with the others. If WHISTLER brings to mind the famous painting "Whistler's Mother," you might be on the right track. When I solved it, I ended up searching online to determine whether there was a painter called Close, since the word Close didn't fit any apparent themes.
