How I solved today’s Strands:

I assumed that this round would focus on legal terms or a tennis-themed category like the last one.

I formed the word SCOUT (non-theme) and saw that I could nearly form the word SCOTUS—an acronym for US Supreme Court—but it fell short.

I focused on the "QU" in the bottom left corner and managed to create the word ESQUIRE, an obvious hit. 🔵It appears to be judicial terms, after all!

Might not be: I formed the word QUEEN and it was a hit. 🔵Perhaps it's about royal titles.

QUEEN went bingo, yes. 🔵

DUCHESS followed. 🔵

KNIGHT was in the upper left. 🔵

VISCOUNT filled the upper right. 🔵

I puzzled over the last few letters across the center. I couldn't form NOBLE, ROYAL, or MONARCH. Let's try a hint! 💡

I found EARL with help from the hint. 🔵

Ah, the spangram is TITLES. 🟡

Lastly, BARON. 🔵

How to play Strands:

Discover the Strands game on the New York Times website and in the NYT Games app.

Upon starting, you'll see a game board with letters, as well as a theme clue such as "Better with age." Your mission is to discover hidden words that reflect the theme.

A word search and crossword hybrid

The key word to locate is the "spangram," which more explicitly represents the puzzle's theme (e.g., FERMENTED for the recent "Better with age" puzzle). It will span the game board, either left-to-right or top-to-bottom. When found, it will be highlighted in yellow. Solving the spangram usually makes other words simpler to discover.

In Strands, words can travel in any direction (up, down, left, right, or diagonally), and each letter is used only once. There is only one correct solution. When you find a puzzle word (like KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI), it will be highlighted in blue.

If you're stuck, you may submit non-theme words (as long as they're four letters or more) to get credit towards a single hint. When you submit three non-theme words, the "Hint" button will be clickable. Clicking it will highlight the letters for one theme word; you'll still have to connect these highlighted letters in the proper order to create the word. If there's already a hint active, and you use another hint prior to solving for that word, its letter order will be revealed.

How to win Strands:

Unlike Connections and Wordle, you cannot fail Strands. When you submit guesses, you will either correctly identify an answer, gain hint credit, or the text will shake back and forth, indicating that your word is too short or not valid. You can't run out of chances, and there's no time limit.

You earn a victory when you've used all board letters, meaning you've located the spangram and all theme words. Similar to other NYT games, after solving the puzzle, you'll see a shareable card showing your performance: blue dots 🔵 indicate theme words found, the yellow dot 🟡 indicates when you found the spangram, and a lightbulb 💡 indicates words gathered with hints.

After solving the puzzle, you can share your achievements on social media for bragging rights. The entertainment value of this Strands game is unmatched, especially if you manage to solve it without using any hints. Today's Strands hint suggests considering royal titles or work-related labels, aligning with the theme words.
