I believe today's puzzle revolves around words associated with playing—maybe playground equipment, say. I find the word "ACTOR" along the bottom, but it's not a theme word. I also spot WATCH, TOLL, ATOLL, HATCH, SEAT, and SEAL, but none of these match the theme words. Let's move on to a hint! 💡

I find HALO. 🔵 I'll need another hint now. 💡

I get FALLOUT. 🔵 It looks like video game titles.

Here's the spangram: VIDEOGAMES. ☠️

UNCHARTED is nestled up in the top left corner. 🔵

I can almost uncover "FARCRY", but it's not quite right.

Ah, I see "CRAFT"—that's probably "STARCRAFT" or "WARCRAFT", right? Hmm, not likely! I think it's "MINECRAFT". 🔵

Lastly, OVERWATCH. 🔵

How to play Strands

You can play Strands on the New York Times website and in the NYT Games app.

Upon starting, you'll see a game board with letters, accompanied by a clue. This will suggest the puzzle's theme—like "Better with age." Your objective is to find hidden words within the board that fit the puzzle’s theme.

A crossword and word search hybrid

The most crucial word to find is the "spangram," which clarifies the puzzle's theme. For example, the spangram for the puzzle with the theme "Better with age" is "FERMENTED". The spangram spans the entire game board, either from left to right or top to bottom. Finding the spangram usually makes the rest of the puzzle much easier.

In Strands, words can travel any direction (up, down, left, right, and diagonal), and you will only use each letter once. There's only one correct solution. Whenever you correctly identify a puzzle's word (like "KOMBUCHA", "MISO", or "KIMCHI"), it will be highlighted in blue.

If you struggle with the puzzle, you can submit any non-theme words (as long as they're four letters or more) to get credit for a single hint. If you submit three non-theme words, the "Hint" button will become clickable; upon clicking, all the letters in one of the theme words will be highlighted. You'll still have to connect these highlighted letters in the right order to form one of the theme words. If a hint is already provided and you use another one, the word's letter order will be revealed.

How to win Strands

Unlike Connections and Wordle, you can't lose Strands. When you submit guesses, you'll either successfully identify an answer, earn credit to use toward a hint, or the text will shake back and forth, indicating that your word is too short or not valid. You won't run out of guesses, and there is no time limit.

You win when you've used all the letters on the board, meaning you've identified the spangram and all the theme words. Like other NYT games, upon solving the puzzle, you'll see a shareable card demonstrating your performance today: blue dots 🔵 indicate theme words you found, the yellow dot 🟡 indicates when you found the spangram, and a lightbulb 💡 indicates words you received a hint for.
