Are you ready to learn the solutions to today’s Connections puzzle? I'm revealing them below.
What are the yellow words in today’s Connections?
The yellow grouping is considered the most straightforward. Today's yellow group theme is ALARM CLOCK BUTTONS, and the words are: ALARM, HOUR, SNOOZE, TIME SET.
What are the green words in today’s Connections?
The green grouping is supposed to be the second-easiest. Today's green category theme is OPPORTUNITIES TO PROPOSE AN IDEA, and the words are: PERHAPS, SAY, SUPPOSE, WHAT IF.
What are the blue words in today’s Connections?
The blue grouping is the second-hardest. Today's blue category theme is UNIQUE HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS, and the words are: KISS, NERD, RUNT, WHOPPER.
What are the purple words in today’s Connections?
The purple grouping is considered the hardest. Today's purple category theme is FAMOUS DISNEY SINGERS (LEAVING OUT THE LAST LETTER OF THEIR NAMES), and the words are: DO, DOPE, GRUMP, SLEEP.
How I solved today’s Connections
Ugh, GRUMP and DOPE sound like names of dwarfs from Snow White (Grumpy and Dopey), don't they? I wonder if there's a category of their names, minus “Y.” I see SLEEP, but nothing else. (As far as I know, there wasn't a dwarf named “Kissy.”) That's frustrating.
I see PERHAPS, SUPPOSE, and WHAT IF, and those are all phrases you might say if you were wondering something. Hmmm, what else? Ah, SAY, as in “SAY, could you turn on that lamp?” 🟩
I think there might be a clock/alarm functions category, with SLEEP, SNOOZE, TIME SET, and ALARM. That word HOUR is making me nervous—I hope it's not a “one away.” Dang, it sure is.
Oh, it looks like there's a Halloween category: WHOPPER, RUNT, NERD, and KISS. 🟦
I'm mad at myself: I just remembered there's a dwarf named Doc. That means DO, SLEEP, GRUMP, and DOPE is my dwarf category. 🟪
That leaves the clock functions of HOUR, SNOOZE, TIME SET, and ALARM. 🟨
How to play Connections
For more information on playing Connections, check out my complete Connections game guide. Here's a quick summary of the rules:
First, find the Connections game on the New York Times website or in their Games app (formerly the Crossword app). You'll see a game board with 16 tiles, each containing one word or phrase. Your job is to select a group of four tiles that share something in common—either as the same type of thing or by using wordplay. Select your four choices and hit the Submit button. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be revealed. (Yellow is the easiest, followed by green, then blue, then purple.) If your guess was incorrect, you'll have a chance to try again.
To emerge victorious in Connections, it's crucial to remember that the categorization is purposely challenging. Anticipate groups with overlapping elements. For instance, I encountered a perplexing mix that appeared to consist of six breakfast items: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON somehow found itself in a group of artists, accompanying CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG was classified under items that arrive in sets of twelve (together with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). So, be confident that your selected quartet comprises only the specified items before hitting "submit".
If you find yourself at a loss, a different approach is to focus on words with seemingly unrelated connections to the others. If the only thought that springs to mind when you encounter WHISTLER is "Whistler's Mother," a renowned painting, you may hit the jackpot. When I tackled this challenge, I opted to investigate whether Close was indeed a painter, as Close didn't fit into any apparent themes.
If you still can't crack it, another solution when stuck is to consult some useful tips – hence our daily sharing of hints! So, check back tomorrow for another challenging puzzle!
