This board is filled with movie titles, but the principles of Connections still hold.

What are the categories for today's Connections?

  • Yellow: NEW YORK CITY INSPIRED LOCATIONS
  • Green: RHYMING TITLES
  • Blue: MEASUREMENT ENDINGS
  • Purple: ANIMAL STARTERS IN TITLES

Double spoiler alert: The solutions to today's Connections puzzle are coming up.

Set to reveal the answers to today's Connections challenge? I'll list them below.

Yellow words in today's Connections puzzle:

The yellow group is typically the most straightforward. The theme for today's yellow category is NEW YORK CITY INSPIRED LOCATIONS and the words are: CHINATOWN, DUMBO, MANHATTAN, WALL STREET.

Green words in today's Connections puzzle:

The green group is supposed to be a bit simpler. The theme for today's green category is RHYMING TITLES and the words are: BE KIND REWIND, E.T., FRIGHT NIGHT, KILL BILL.

Blue words in today's Connections puzzle:

The blue group is the second-hardest. The theme for today's blue category is MEASUREMENT ENDINGS and the words are: HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, MY LEFT FOOT, THE GREEN MILE, THE LONGEST YARD.

Purple words in today's Connections puzzle:

The purple group is thought to be the most difficult. The hidden theme for today's purple category is ANIMAL STARTERS IN TITLES and the words are: BEETLEJUICE, DOGMA, FOXY BROWN, OCTOPUSSY.

How I solved today's Connections:

This one took a while. However, it's not a complicated puzzle. These are all movie titles, leading me to consider directors or common actors. However, there's usually internal logic that doesn't rely on outside knowledge.

My eyes settled on the four movie titles that contain animals: BEETLEJUICE, OCTOPUSSY, FOXY BROWN, DOGMA. 🟪 This must be our purple category!

The yellow group features four movie titles that are New York City-related: WALL STREET, CHINATOWN, MANHATTAN, DUMBO. 🟨

Four movie titles have units of measurement in them: HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, THE GREEN MILE, THE LONGEST YARD, MY LEFT FOOT. 🟦

And finally, we have FRIGHT NIGHT, KILL BILL, BE KIND REWIND, E.T., which are all film titles that rhyme. 🟩

Connecting the dots in the Connections puzzle:

Here's how I connected the colors:

  1. Purple: New York City-themed animal titles.
  2. Yellow: Movie titles with a New York City connection.
  3. Blue: Titles with units of measurement.
  4. Green: Rhyming film titles.

Congratulations! You solved today's Connections puzzle.

That's it! You've now solved today's Connections puzzle, so go celebrate your accomplishment. Good job!

Find the Connections game through the New York Times website or their former Crossword app. Here, you'll observe a game board composed of 16 tiles, with each including a word or phrase. Your duty is to spot and gather four tiles that share a similarity. This similarity can be the same type of item (for instance, RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all types of moist weather), or there might be wordplay involved (like BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH being several kinds of lists: bucket list, guest list, etc.).

After you've chosen four tiles, click on the Submit button. If you've accurately determined the groupings, the category and color will be uncovered. (Yellow is the simplest, followed by green, blue, and purple in ascending order of difficulty.) If your guesses are incorrect, you'll have an opportunity to try again.

You triumph when you've correctly identified all four groups. However, if you commit four errors before you're done, the game ceases and the answers are disclosed.

Secrets to Victory in Connections

The integral factor in winning Connections is understanding that the categorization is intentionally confusing. Anticipate to encounter intersecting groups. For example, one conundrum appeared to contain six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON was part of a group of painters (along with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER), and EGG was in a group of things that arrive in dozens (along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). Therefore, don't hit "submit" without double-checking that your selected four tiles contain only those four items.

If you feel lost, another strategy is to focus on words that do not appear to have any connection to the others. If you only consider WHISTLER and think only of the painting "Whistler's Mother," you could be on to something. When I solved that one, I realized there was a painter named Close, as Close didn't seem to fit any evident themes.

Lastly, try consulting helpful hints to conquer when you're at a loss. That's why we offer these tips every day. Keep an eye out for the next puzzle!
